Artemisia annua L. is a medicinal plant being used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2000 years for treating many disorders including malaria. The isolation of artemisinin from Artemisia annua L. and the characterization of its antimalarial effect in the 1970s was initiated by Chinese scientists, which is regarded as one of the most important advances in malaria control in modern times. Artemisinin, also known as Qinghaosu, and its derivatives are a group of drugs that possess the most rapid action of all current drugs against Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Treatments containing an artemisinin derivative (artemisinin-combination therapies, ACTs) are now standard treatment worldwide for P. falciparum malaria. The starting compound artemisinin is isolated from the plant Artemisia annua, sweet wormwood, a herb employed in Chinese traditional medicine. Chemically, artemisinin is a sesquiterpene lactone containing an unusual peroxide bridge. This peroxide is believed to be responsible for the drug's mechanism of action. Few other natural compounds with such a peroxide bridge are known. (Ascaridole is another.) Use of the drug by itself as a monotherapy is explicitly discouraged by the World Health Organization, as there have been signs that malarial parasites are developing resistance to the drug. Therapies that combine artemisinin with some other antimalarial drug are the preferred treatment for malaria and are both effective and well tolerated in patients. The drug is also increasingly being used in Plasmodium vivax malaria, as well as being a topic of research in cancer treatment. Artemether is highly effective against the blood schizonts of both malarial parasites P. falciparum and P. vivax. It is available as mono-therapy but usually applied in combination with lumefantrine in clinical treatments of malaria. World Health Organization guidelines for the treatment of uncomplicated falciparum malaria recommend the use of this artemisinin-based combination therapy, and approved by Swissmedic in December 2008 and recently approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. Where will Hunan 3W Botanical Extract’s Artemisia annua Extract used to? Anti-malaria: Artemisinin contains two linked-together oxygen atoms forming the 'endoperoxide bridge' (C-O-O-C) , which can cleave at the O-O bond and form free radicals with the high iron content of malaria parasites, thus leading to the parasites’ damage and death. Studies have proven that Artemisinin has fewer side effects compared with chloroquine and is more effective when the malaria parasites are chloroquine resistant. Anti-cancer: Similarly, Artemisinin is also toxic to cancer cells because these cells sequester a larger amount of iron content than normal and healthy human cells. According to the Gordon Research Institute, tests have shown that Artemisinin can cause rapid and extensive damage and death of cancer cells while seldom hurting normal cells. It is most powerful in treating leukemia and colon cancer and its active ingredients have also been proven toxic to melanoma, breast, ovarian, prostate, CNS and renal cancer.
